We played Monopoly tonight
I was doomed from the start
Fourth to role
Landing on the pay income tax spot
The first two times around the board
While also landing on Chance
(I had to pay in)
And Community Chest
(I had to pay in)
The husband and kids faired much better than I
Eagerly snatching up properties, railroads, and utilities
Racking up the dough
Settling in for the long haul
While I slowly lost money
Because there was nothing left to buy
And I couldn’t catch a break
I lost
It so closely mirrored the current state of affairs
That I had to take a moment
To catch my breath
And stop feeling sorry for myself
We try to make a place in this world
Make a difference
Yet there are always bigger fish in the sea
Waiting to gobble you up in one big bite
Pretty sure I won’t be playing
Monopoly again any time soon
The game of Monopoly was originally designed by a woman named Elizabeth Magie in the early 1900s. She wanted this game to portray the consequences of income inequality. And she succeeded in this quest. It is no wonder that so many of us feel frustrated when we lose.
