Hook Your Chin on My Shoulder

Come here
I say to you
I need a hug

You roll your eyes and tromp over
Large feet thumping heavily across the wooden floor
I find myself grinning in anticipation
As you lumber ever near

Teenage sons don’t always
Give us the pleasure of their affection
But you’ve decided that it’s okay
In this short moment
To give your mom a little bit of love

You pretend exasperation
As if the gesture was done to placate me
But I’m certain
That you feel the same sense of peace that I do
When you hook your chin on my shoulder
And lean your tall frame over mine
