Peace in Small Moments

Life can be crazy hectic at times
With obligations and commitments
Piling up up up
One upon the other
With not an end in sight

The weight eventually makes everyday tasks
Seem insurmountable
The ability to do everything
-and to do it well-
Seem unattainable

Such circumstance often leads to sleepless nights
As panic settles beneath the sheets next to me
Crowding the soft space between
My head and the pillow

It is then that I think of you
-breathe in, breathe out-
Pray for peace of mind
As my body itches restlessly
From crowded thinking

-breathe in, breathe out-
Open my heart
Ask for peace to settle
Within the hollow places left over
After the panic subsides

Eventually peace comes and I sleep

I do not let that energy fade away the next day
I carry it with me
Like a precious babe
Revel in it
Smell it
Taste it
Feel it

Allow myself to enjoy the smaller moments
Like the bird swooping around my car at the stop light
Or the squirrel prancing across the greenway
The breeze soft in my hair
A child’s laugh from the neighbor’s house next door

Finding peace in these small moments rejuvenates me
Keeps me grounded in the now
Where I can store it up
And use it until it has drained away
