I caught you texting
In your room the other day
The door was shut
Which is against the rules
In our house
When I asked who you were texting
You shrugged nonchalantly
Declaring that it was a random friend
Who was helping you with your homework
Then your brother told me
You had been texting a girl
And my heart started beating erratically
My head abuzz with questions
I’m not ready
For you to grow up
And experience your first kiss
Or hold a hand that isn’t my own
Though yours is bigger than mine now
Gulping down my sadness
I enter your room
To find you engrossed in a book
About Lego building of all things
And sit at the foot of your bed
For a little chat
…and so it begins
