Aside

Morning Hug

Into the living room
You come
Eyes sleepy from
A long night’s rest
Ready for a snuggle

You crawl into my lap
Curling into my arms
Just as you have done
Every morning since
You were big enough
To do it

Looking at you
I realize something is different
Though my mind hasn’t
Reconciled the change
Until we stand up

I put my arms around you

Surprise zaps me awake
Your eyes are closer
To mine than they were
Just last night

You grew
I shriek
To your utter delight

Satisfaction is apparent
In your grin
As you all but strut
Out of the living room
To share the news
With your dad
