Sister Friend
Regret
Maybe
More like
A deep longing
To have you
Near
A shared childhood
Adulthood
Forcing us onto
Separate paths
Still
Memories are strong
The heart tied deeply
To
A linen closet
Turned rocketship
Castles erected from
Pink blankets
And
A magical doorway
Drawn with crayon
On our bedroom wall
Turn the knob
Step through
I am there
Always

This is a reflection of my youngest years. When I look backwards to the very first of my memories, most of them include my sister, Jennifer. Our childhood was in constant flux, moving from military base to military base as we did. While we don’t have physical roots, like a hometown, we do have emotional roots that run deep. It is those emotional bonds that tie military brats to history. And that makes them all the more precious. I can look back on those times and know I had a friend, and not just any old friend, but a sister friend. Love you Sis.
